Is CAVA Healthy? What the Nutrition Numbers Show

An honest, numbers-first look at CAVA: the strengths, the watch-outs, and how to build a healthier bowl.

Updated September 29, 2026By the BowlMacros teamData: CAVA official nutrition guide

Quick answer

  • CAVA can be very healthy. You control every ingredient, and the menu is full of vegetables, legumes, lean proteins and olive-oil dressings.
  • The same menu makes bowls from 320 to 1,255+ calories. What you choose matters more than where you eat.
  • The biggest watch-out is sodium: 3 of CAVA's 11 curated items exceed the 2,300 mg daily value on their own.

"Is CAVA healthy?" is really "is my CAVA order healthy?", because a build-your-own bowl can be almost anything. So instead of a yes or no, here's what CAVA's own nutrition data shows. It covers the strengths, the weak spots, and how to tilt an order in the right direction.

What CAVA does well

Lots of fiber

Fiber is one of the nutrients most Americans fall short on. The Daily Value is 28g. CAVA's Black Lentils alone provide 15g, SuperGreens 4g, avocado 7g, and falafel 5g. Our lentil-based vegan bowl reaches 24g, most of a day's fiber in one meal.

Lean protein options

Grilled Steak (23g protein, 160 cal), Grilled Chicken (28g) and Braised Lamb (24g) make it easy to hit 30–60g of protein. Our highest-protein build reaches 68g for 705 calories. See the high-protein guide.

Low sugar

Almost nothing on the build-your-own line is sweet. Most items have 0–3g of sugar. The highest are Roasted Vegetables and Balsamic Date Vinaigrette, at 5g each.

Mediterranean-style ingredients

Legumes, vegetables, olive oil, tahini and herbs are the core of the Mediterranean eating pattern, which is widely studied and recommended by dietary guidelines. CAVA's menu is built from these same staples.

Where CAVA can go wrong

Sodium adds up fast

These curated items exceed 2,300 mg of sodium on their own: Crispy Falafel (2,440 mg), Greek Chicken (2,560 mg), Spicy Chicken + Avocado (2,460 mg). In custom bowls, rice (770 mg), falafel (810 mg) and chicken (670 mg) are the biggest contributors. Our low-sodium guide shows how to stay under 600 mg.

Calorie-dense extras

Garlic Dressing (180 cal), Avocado (160), Falafel (350) and Pita Chips (280) are all fine on their own. Stack a few of them on a grain base and a "salad" can pass 1,000 calories. See the low-calorie guide.

Pitas are heavy

Every curated pita is 800+ calories and 1,800+ mg sodium. See the curated bowl and pita rankings.

A healthy CAVA bowl, in 5 steps

  1. Base: greens, Black Lentils, or half and half.
  2. Main: Grilled Steak, Grilled Chicken or Braised Lamb. For plant-based, pick Roasted Vegetables.
  3. Dips: one or two of tzatziki, hummus, red pepper hummus or roasted eggplant.
  4. Toppings: load up on the vegetables (tomato + cucumber, pickled onions, fiery broccoli, cucumber). Have avocado or feta, not every rich topping.
  5. Dressing: one, preferably Yogurt Dill, Lemon-Herb Tahini or Balsamic Date.

Frequently asked questions

Is CAVA healthier than fast food?

CAVA's menu is built from vegetables, legumes, lean proteins and olive-oil dressings, and you control every ingredient, so it's easy to build a high-fiber, high-protein meal. But a loaded bowl or pita can still have over 1,000 calories and 2,000+ mg of sodium, so your choices matter.

What is the healthiest thing to order at CAVA?

A bowl with greens or Black Lentils, a lean protein (Grilled Steak or Grilled Chicken), one or two light dips, plenty of vegetable toppings and one light dressing like Yogurt Dill or Lemon-Herb Tahini.

Is CAVA good for losing weight?

It can be. Lighter CAVA bowls start around 320 calories with 30g protein, based on CAVA's published values. Limiting grains, fried falafel, pita chips, avocado and Garlic Dressing makes the biggest difference. This is general information, not medical advice.
